Heritage Open Day Royal Albert Bridge Waterside Tour

As part of the Heritage Open Day, we'll be running a tour focusing on the history of the Royal Albert Bridge, and the story behind Brunel's iconic construction. We'll start at the Bridging the Tamar Visitor Centre at the Tamar Bridge Offices and then start a walking tour down to the waterside on the Plymouth side of the Tamar Bridge. Sturdy footwear is advised as there is a steep section of path on this walking tour.
Please note, the tour will be in locations with views of the bridge but does not involve any direct access to the Royal Albert Bridge.

Join us for a tour under Brunel’s unique bridge and discover how oysters nearly foiled his plans. Take in the view across to Cornwall and Saltash where a law was passed to allow the oyster fishermen to continue their trade into the 20th century. The Tamar is also famed for its salmon which were, until recently, netted upstream of Saltash.

Along with the main line across the Royal Albert Bridge, what is now the Tamar Valley line running under the bridge, opened up the markets in London to fresh produce from Cornwall on the day it was picked or caught.

Plus much more about the bridge and the area.
